Hi! I'm Luca Dellanna, the author of 7 books.
I've been frustrated since day one of this pandemic, because common sense could have helped us avoid most of the suffering of the last few months. And yet, because most people do not know about the basic principles of how viruses spread and how to contain them, our reaction to this novel virus has been confused and ineffective.
Just like I did in my book "Ergodicity", I take a very complex subject and explain its basics in plain English. Everyone can and should be able to understand what's going on and how we can go back to a normal life as soon as possible.
You will get tools to understand and explain to others what's going on, to discriminate information from bullshit, and to take educated choices and help others taking them.
Two reviews of my previous book:
What you'll find inside
The book is divided into three parts.
The first part answers the questions of how we got here. It's about the risks and mistakes, but also about how viruses spread, variants, and herd immunity. It alternates chapters about what happened and chapters about how pandemics work. The first part will be almost the length of some of my other books.
The second part answers the question of how do we get out of here, and it's about the tools (vaccines, masks, etc) and policies we can use. It covers both their pros and cons, and suggests where they can work best and where they shouldn't be used.
The third part answers the question of how do we prevent the next pandemic, and examines both "hard" solutions (policies, relocating virus labs, etc.) and "soft" ones, such as education and stories. It also explains which metrics we should focus on and educates you on how to read data about pandemics and how to spot lies and problems.
Some of the chapters inside:
- The first rule of epidemiology
- Why was the first rule ignored
- Why are there waves? (it's not just seasonality)
- Proof that face masks work
- Where face masks do not work
- When lockdowns work and when they don't
- The lab leak hypothesis
- Government mistakes
- Implementing good ventilation
- Evaluating how viruses infect people
- How to get better data
- How can we get out of this
- …and much more.
Everything is written in plain English and accessible to a high-schooler.
